Hodges - Family Crest Coffee Mug

Hodges Coffee Mug | Family Crest / Coat of Arms | English Heritage

The surname Hodges is an English family name of medieval origin, derived from Hodge, a familiar form of the personal name Roger. Introduced into England by the Normans, Roger developed from Germanic elements meaning “fame” and “spear.” Hodges originated as a patronymic surname, meaning “son of Hodge,” and became established in England during the Middle Ages, particularly in southern and western counties. Historical records associate various Hodges families with Kent, Gloucestershire, Somerset, and London, where members became landowners, merchants, and tradesmen. Several distinct coats of arms were recorded for families bearing the surname, reflecting different family lineages rather than a single universal Hodges coat of arms. The name also spread into Scotland and Ireland, particularly through migration and English settlement, before becoming established in North America and other parts of the English-speaking world.
