Cronin Flask | Family Crest / Coat of Arms | Irish / Gaelic | Pocket Flasks

The surname Cronin is an ancient Irish Gaelic family name, originating in southwest Ireland and particularly associated with County Cork. The name derives from the Irish Ó Cróinín, meaning “descendant of Cróinín.” Cróinín is a diminutive of the Gaelic word crón, meaning “brown,” “dark-complexioned,” or “swarthy,” and was originally used as a personal name or descriptive byname. The Cronins belonged to the Corca Laoidhe, an important ancient population group whose territory encompassed much of southwest County Cork. Historical accounts place the family particularly around Clonakilty and the surrounding region, with branches later becoming established elsewhere in Cork and neighboring counties. Over the centuries, Ó Cróinín was anglicized as Cronin, which remains especially strongly associated with Munster and County Cork.
